Children will identify the small animals (minibeasts) by making observations and using a small animal key. Children should not be encouraged to use the word 'minibeast' because this is not a category of animal. Children should be encouraged to use the word 'organism' of which 'animal' is a sub-group.
The children should recognise that the small animals can be placed in particular groups and explain their reasoning. This activity should help them in deciding on the nature of the groups.
