Teaching idea
Children should be encouraged to construct their own
table in which they can keep the complete set of results for this activity.
Children examine the stopping distance of a car that is travelling at
different speeds and stopping under different conditions.
The children can then start looking for patterns in the data. They could
construct a variety of graphs to support their analysis. Focus on the
nature of the two materials interacting in the stopping process. What
road surface and tyre type could improve stopping distances?
Learning outcome
Children will be able to
recognise a pattern linking speed, weather conditions and distance stopped.
Children will be able to group surfaces into 'high friction' and 'low friction'.
