Teaching idea
This activity supports Earth, Sun and Moon extension
work. Children investigate the angle of the Sun's light on the Earth
at various times of the year.
Get the children to use a compass to observe and record, on several
days in the winter, the direction of the Sun or of shadows from the
Sun when it has just risen and just before it sets. Does the model in
the activity agree with the observations?
Learning outcome
Children will know that the
seasons are due to the angle of impact of the Sun's light on the Earth.
